The earth itself is known to hum; why wouldn't we hear weird noises? I hear them all of the time, faintly, but true. Sometimes it wakes me up, and I think it must have been a dream or my imagination--but sometimes it's while I am trying to sleep or it's quiet in general.

I live in Southeastern Massachusetts.  The sound I heard was definitely not normal.  It was the sound of a gigantic jet engine seeming to come from all over the western sky yet no jet was visible.  It lasted for 20 minutes so I knew it was not a passing jet as it would have had to "hover" to do that. I live about 20 miles as the crow flys from T.F. Greene Airport so I see and hear jets all the time heading in and out. This was not one of those.  Someone told me that it could have been a mechanic revving a jet engine for testing.  LOL  I've lived in this area for 24 years and have never heard a jet engine totally wound out for 20 minutes as a test. I have no idea what it was, but it was not "normal".

i too have heard this in phoenix, but it sounded more liek a tuba or trombone playing a singe note, than dropping about 1/2 or 1/3rd in pitch to a lower note.  usually after 10pm.
