Best Deadhead Fan Goodies

One of the best things about a DIY economy is that we all get to experience one another's unique talents. Sites like Etsy and eBay give us the chance to market our goods around the world, and the Internet itself lets us set up shop from anywhere, anytime. While that's unfortunate for the local shop, it does mean that we get to try cool fan-made items from clothing to fragrance lines.

Winterizing Veggie Gardens

For me, making sure to turn off the hose and getting my compost onto the soil pretty much sum up what winterizing means for my garden. Of course we harvest anything left over and clear out anything that's died, but I must confess that I've never checked the pH of my soil like this piece advises. I also never thought to plant garlic throughout the garden now, which makes perfect sense, of course.

Best Books of 2018

As 2018 wraps up in the next few weeks (can you even believe it's almost over?), it's time to start thinking about anything you want to finish in 2018 that you didn't get around to just yet--including books! There are so many great lists of "The Best Books of 2018" available that there's no shortage of ideas if you don't already have a TBR (To Be Read) pile, but if you have a list we'd love to know what you want to read and what you enjoyed most in 2018.

80s Thanksgiving

Everyone seems nostalgic for the days when our president didn't embarrass us over rakes, geography, using words and so forth, our kids played outside more often and Dungeons and Dragons was all the rage. We all know that the 80s were far from perfect but there's definitely a few things to miss, especially if you remember them. If you want a more 80s Thanksgiving, try:

Teasing your hair up, wearing enormous puffy sleeves or leg warmers to dinner and pronouncing the turkey "rad."

Ohio to Criminalize Abortion

I'd like to challenge every person who's against abortion to go volunteer at a clinic for just a single day. Go and listen to women tell their stories of heartache and heartbreak, hear the teens too young to be parents, the parents too old or sick to have more children and the terrified women whose lives could take dangerous turns during a pregnancy. Couple that with the harassment they receive at the hands of a bunch of protestors, who should be called terrorists and who are quite frequently mostly men, and see if you don't change your mind about what being pro-choice means.

Black Friday Bargains

As someone who doesn't frequently shop on Black Friday, I don't have any big plans this year, but I know my husband's scouring the market for two things: cheap TVs and phones. We have a pretty old borrowed TV since our old one blew up (it caught fire!) and he'd like a more modern one, and my phone is ancient but I refuse to buy a new one because 1. I don't like buying new things if my old ones are still workable and 2. it has a sentimental rock stuck in it from one of its many drops.

Chinese Developing Private Space Industry

Until recently, the Chinese space program was government run. China opened up its space exploration and exploitation to private companies in 2014. In the last few years, private companies have entered the arena in China and are pushing hard to catch up to the private space industry that is thriving in the United States. Now there are eighty commercial Chinese space-technology startups.

Radioactive Waste 359 - Penn State Is Working On A Department Of Energy Grant For The Recovery Of Rare-Earth Elements During Uranium Recycling

Penn State University has just received an eight hundred thousand dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to research new methods for removing rare-earth fission products from molten salt baths which are used to electro-refine and reduce nuclear wastes during the recycling of uranium. The grant will be used to study the efficient recovery of rare-earth elements using liquid metals.

civics classes

Thank you for all your efforts in 2018 and staying engaged in the future of our country. I'm writing to request that you and Michelle use your influence to get our educational system nationwide back in gear by mandating civics classes so our children learn our ideals and what an amazing, important model and partner we are for the world. Now 2 generations- Gen X and the Mellanials- have not had required class and so we're heading towards a citizenry uneducated about our basic ideals and how government works for and with us. It's become evident that they can't teach their children since they never learned themselves. So,it seems to me, that along with global warming, it's urgent that we start now.
I have done basic research in the western US and found that some, but not all, of the charter schools are teaching basics under history class titles. But all of the scholars in community schools are not directing any attention to this need. I'll continue to contact senators, representative, governors and education supervisors with the same urgency.

Thank you.
Barbara

Nuclear Fusion 52 - Chinese Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak Achieves Breakthrough Tempurature

The Chinese are committed to a new fleet of nuclear fission reactors. They are also putting money into a variety of other energy sources including nuclear fusion. Their Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) began operations in 2006 at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASHIPS).
