Can Horror Movies Help with Weight Loss?

One study says yes

It's a pretty freaky treatment idea that, if it truly works, could have everyone watching blood and guts throughout the holiday season while they attempt to not gain weight: researchers are saying that you can burn the equivalent of a chocolate bar just by watching a horror movie! They said that of the films studied, The Shining worked best, which I don't doubt. That thing is scary.

So you can burn 113 calories by watching 90 minutes of horror, which is about what a half-hour walk burns. It could be a more enjoyable, albeit lengthy way, of losing weight for some people, but I have to wonder if it's healthy to have your heart rate up that high while you just sit still. What other effects could be lying under the surface in this scenario?

What other freaky ways have you heard of losing weight?

Telepathic Brainstorming

It's science!

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Washington have created an amazing game that relies on brain waves for communication. It takes three people to play the game, and while it wasn't good for delivering complex thoughts or actual mind-reading, it did allow people to commuicate telepathically to decide whether or not to rotate a block. It's pretty simple but it's a start at seeing how humans might be able to nonverbally communicate with one another by thought alone.

The researchers even gave the participants false information to see whether or not they were communicating effectively only to discover that the subjects were able to tell which thoughts were real or not most of the time. It's a very interesting experiment that points a step closer to actual mind-reading, if that will ever truly be possible, and it would be interesting to see where these researchers take their findings.

That Time the Meteor Crushed Your Malibu

As meteors are wont to do

Many of us imagine what it might be like if a meteor were to strike the earth and render us all long gone, but what about a small meteor just big enough to take out your ride? That's what happened to Michelle Knapp, 18, who thankfully wasn't in her car when a meteor struck it, creating a giant hole in the trunk. The meteor went straight through and created a hole beneath her vehicle, and she could see the smoking bowling-ball-sized rock laying in it when she peered through.

We earthlings get 60 tons of meteoric material every day, but most of it isn't big enough for us to even notice the impact. This kind of story makes you think twice about the sky falling for Chicken Little and whether or not to wear a helmet, you know, just about anywhere. Are helmets even meteor proof? I'd wager not!

True Urban Legends

Tis the season for some scary stories!

Urban legends have always been irresistible nuggets of life, reeling us all in with their promises of darkness and jump scares. Many urban legends have been made into media, from movies to TV shows like Supernatural, and the fringe stories that people used to share at parties grew into global phenomena shared over the Internet. But what about urban legends that ring of truth?

Several urban legends have turned out to be true. From the famous "Alice" killings to the supposed "Dog Boy," there are many urban legends that at least have roots in true stories. There are even whole books written about true urban legends, much to the delight of many a fan. Unfortunately, if some of our favorite legends are true, it does mean that real people got hurt in them.

What is your favorite urban legend? Does it have any truth?

Are UFOs Real?

It's kind of arrogant to assume they're not, and this DOD guy says yes

Saying that UFOs aren't real based on no evidence is like people claiming that oxygen, narwhals and love itself aren't real because they can't see it. Most consipiracy theories hold a little truth to them at the very least, and it would make much more sense for other life to exist in a universe as large as ours, so when the former manager of the Department of Defense Aerospace Threat program confirmed that they are real, it seems pretty legit.

Even so, sightings have been greatly reduced in recent years, prompting us to wonder why people aren't seeing--or merely aren't reporting--as many incidents. Perhaps they are and they just aren't getting media attention. Perhaps alien life saw who the United States elected as president and thought, "Aw, heck no," and turned tail back to their own planets, or maybe they finished researching on us and decided we weren't worth it to begin with! Perhaps some of our alien movies were too over-the-top for them to stomach and they gave up on us at that point.

Whatever the reason, sightings are down and many claim that it's simply that people don't care anymore. More people believe in aliens than ever and they seem bored with the news. What do you think?

Ghosts and wormholes

Could there be a connection?

This weekend I found myself talking about ghosts with a friend (the topic came up in our discussion of Art Bell, RIP). I have been hearing murmurings recently about a new theory of the paranormal, which is as intriguing as it is unproveable.

According to this theory, small wormholes are opening and collapsing all the time, all around us. These wormholes connect different parts of the world, different time periods, or even different universes. These brief, fragile connections go unnoticed most of the time.

Until you're standing in the dark, listening intently.

If you are open to it, and paying attention, you may be lucky enough to hear a wormhole carry sounds or even sudden drafts from the other end of the wormhole. Items may appear or disappear, or be nudged slightly. And then the wormhole vanishes again without a trace, and the sound is gone.

This fascinating theory is at least as plausible as any other theory humans have devised to explain the unexpected sounds in the night. What do you think?

Human Pups

Everyone loves to cosplay, right?

What would you do if someone you knew enjoyed dressing up like a dog all the time? What if it went beyond that? Human pups are people who enjoy not only dressing up as accurately like dogs as possible, but also playing and behaving like dogs.

It's mostly men who do this and they say it goes beyond a sexual fetish. Those who become human pups say that they enjoy having no outside worries and use it as a form of escapism from reality, bills and the harshness of life.

What do you think of human pups? Would it be the lifestyle for you?

Freaky Cool Land Formations

These geological wonders look alien!

Ever heard of Wave Rock in Australia? How about the Stone Forest of China? These amazing geological formations don't look like anything else on Earth. It's always amazing to hear people say that we've discovered all there is to know about our planet; not only are there so many things like these formations to see and explore, but some scientists say we know more about the moon than our own ocean. There are some truly freaky and amazing things on planet earth!

The Eye in Mauritania actually looks like an incredible giant eye from space, while the Chocolate Hills of the Phillipines turn brown every year, looking like peaks of chocolate. There's a cool queen's head rock in Taiwan that almost appears to be sculpted and many other cool formations!

What neat geological wonders have you seen? Share your links and photos below.
