Camera Hooks Found in Bathrooms

Have you seen one?

Plenty of people are wary of using public restrooms these days. Between messes, possible privacy invasions and the violent rhetoric spewed by people that are suddenly against allowing transgender people to use the bathrooms they identify with (after living a lifetime of not even thinking about it), there’s no mystery as to why.

Recently it was discovered that some bathroom hooks have tiny, built-in cameras that can record people in public restrooms. While these cheap cams are sold online as personal security or nanny cams, they offer a new threat to people who just want to do their business in private. Authorities are asking citizens to report these cameras if they see them in a public bathroom.

Real Life Pennywise

Sewer face has people creeped out

Something wicked this way comes… out of the sewers in Northern Ireland, anyway. A creepy face has been caught on camera lurking in the Irish sewer system. Comparisons to Pennywise the clown seem rather far-fetched considering that the face is not that of a clown at all, but there’s definitely an unsettling expression on the individual’s face. The photo, captured in a region of Belfast, was taken during a sewer survey.

Other creepy images found in the sewer, from toys to baby carriages, were also released to the public.

What is the creepiest thing you’ve ever seen in or near the sewer drain?

The 10 most popular conspiracy theories

And why we believe them

The website Big Think has a great list of the 10 most popular conspiracy theories in America today, which is entertaining enough. But even before you peruse the list, the author spends a great deal of time analyzing who believes in conspiracy theories, and why.

There are some communities which seem more likely to believe in conspiracies than the baseline culture. The elderly, the far right, and the working poor are in general most susceptible to conspiracy theories. But why?

Researchers have found that the key is a feeling of lack of control. People who feel like they have little to no control over their lives tend to pursue the form of structured magical thinking which conspiracy theories provide. Conspiracies are a "mental shortcut" which allow us to find meaning in otherwise inscrutable events.

An interesting theory, to be sure.

As for the most popular conspiracy theories, they are:

1. A secret group controlling the world (the article lumps in the Illuminati, the Zionists, the Bilderberg group all into this same category).
2. Obama birthers.
3. 9/11 was an inside job.
4. Reptilians control the world. (This surprised me - I always assumed this was a fringe belief, if only because it's so bizarre.)
5. JFK assassination.
6. Aliens are contacting us.
7. Fake moon landing.
8. FDA is withholding a cancer cure.
9. Chemtrails.
10. Holocaust deniers.

Tadpole Eyes Open New Doors to Science

(Even if they are a bit freaky)

Did you think a human ear growing on the back of a rat was freaky? Wait until you get a load of this! At Tufts University, it’s all about implanting eyeballs these days. Researchers have been able to give blind tadpoles the gift of sight, but it’s in a pretty unconventional way: by grafting eyeballs onto the tadpoles’ tails.

As crazy as this sounds, it has given scientists some new insights into regenerative medicine. For starters, we now know that it’s possible to see out of eyes that are not attached directly to the brain, opening all kinds of possibilities (hopefully outside a Guillermo del Toro movie). They’ve also discovered that a migraine medicine can help the body foster nerve growth in amphibians, which could open new possibilities for humans.

What do you think of these findings?

Amazing ghost footage captured at abandoned RAF Base

If it's not fake, it's incredible evidence

If this footage isn't fake, then it's an incredible piece of evidence. I qualify it up front, because as we all know, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. And this footage definitely seems too good to be true!

Ghost hunter Steve Wesson and three other people with UK Ghost Hunts were investigating Manby Hall in Lincolnshire when Wesson captured the footage. No one saw or heard anything at the time, and it wasn't until later, when Wesson was reviewing the footage, that he spotted the figure crossing the hall behind them.

Manby Hall is a former Royal Air Force (RAF) base which was decommissioned, then served as a retirement home, and is now abandoned. UK Ghost Hunts investigated the site as part of a new ghost hunting series they are filming for release on Amazon and YouTube.

The figure is obviously not a shadow of one of the team members. Their shadows appear on the wall behind the figure, and are much more distorted and lighter in color. Furthermore, the figure flashes a light as it passes, as if it was holding a flashlight - not something you would ever see in a normal shadow.

Perhaps the most surprising claim about this footage is that no one saw the figure at the time, including the person filming it, who was looking right at it. An important reminder to stay alert and observant whenever you are investigating a location!

Woman Finds Weird Creature in Her Yard

Two-headed beast was alive

You’ve probably heard of two-headed snakes before. The Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Traveling Exhibit even has one on display among other two-headed beasts. This creature, however, was only about four inches long—and its heads were on opposite ends.

You can click here to see a photo of the strange creature, which was discovered in Argentina. The poor creature seemed very shy, which is common for snakes, and recoiled when the woman poked it with some wood. She says it also seemed to blink at her.

It looks rather confused and sad, but wouldn’t anyone being prodded by a giant? Some say that it could simply be a type of caterpillar, and given that it was eating a vine, it quite possibly could be a caterpillar.

What do you think of the strange creature that she found? Even if it’s not a two-headed snake, it’s still an interesting animal.

Bank of America is Fighting Our Robot Overlords

Remember how we never imagined that teen magazines, park rangers and the Webster’s dictionary would be leading the fight against the extreme Right in 2017? Yeah, wrap your head around the fact that Bank of America, Elon Musk and other billionaires are privately funding scientific research to get us out of a matrix in which we are stuck in a simulation of the real world.

That’s right. Many scientists believe that we are living in a Matrix-like world due to the rapid advancement of our technology. It’s not a new concept; philosophers have always wondered if we truly exist or not. But to imagine that we are living in a glitch-filled world (think time lapses, flashbacks, déjà vu) controlled by aliens, robot overlords or some futuristic cyborgs? It’s unsettling, to say the least.

What do you think of the idea? Read up on it a bit, then share your ideas below.

Chilean police document paranormal activity during call

It was a domestic disturbance, alright!

Chileans can't stop talking about the latest paranormal news: While investigating a report of a domestic disturbance, a group of Chilean police officers were terrorized, harassed, and attacked by an unseen force.

The incident happened in the municipality of Fe y Esparanza. When police arrived at the house, they noted broken windows, a burned mattress, and the house's occupants standing outside in the yard. The owners explained that the house was experiencing violent paranormal phenomena. The police brushed off this explanation, and stormed inside.

As the officers questioned the residents, one was hit by a trowel which was thrown from an attic opening. The officers rushed into the attic, only to discover that it was seemingly empty.

One officer loudly demanded that the "demon" haunting the house depart. On hearing no response, the officer turned around to leave the house. Which is when a knife flew across the room and buried itself in his back.

Luckily the officer was wearing a thick bulletproof vest, and was unharmed by the attack.

The homeowners have reported that items set themselves ablaze inside the house, and they live in fear that the entire house will catch fire one night while they sleep. Windows break, people are suddenly overcome with feelings of fear and desperation, and electronic devices frequently fail.

I hope this poor Chilean family finds the help they need to exorcise their home!

Your Ear Wax Profile

Did you know that your ear wax has a lot to say about you? For starters, in the Western world, most people have “wet” ear wax, while in the East, more people have “dry” ear wax. The wax, which holds lots of fats, functions to help keep out bacteria, dust and other substances from your ear, but it is also related to how much you smell!

Studies show that people with “wet” ear wax have more body odor than people with “dry” wax, and the wax itself has its own unpleasant odor. Experts say that someday we may even use it to help diagnose disease. It is already used to help identify facts about different animal species, such as the whale, which can collect more than ten inches of wax over time. Learn more about ear wax and other cool (and gross) facts at Gross Science from PBS.

Are you a dry or wet ear wax person? Do you think it effects how you smell?

The man from Taured

More evidence of parallel universes?

We recently discussed "The Mandela Effect," which posits that there are multiple parallel universes, and sometimes these universes merge, split apart, or that people accidentally hop from one to the other.

Such is the theory with the man known as "The man from Taured." As the story goes, one summer day in 1954, a Caucasian man who was fluent in Japanese, French, and several other languages stepped up to the customs desk in  Tokyo's Haneda Airport. The man was well-dressed and well-kempt, and claimed to be a businessman who traveled a lot. Indeed, his wallet contained currencies from many countries.

The customs agent asked for the man's passport, and discovered that - although the passport looked completely legit - it had been issued by a country named Taured. The man explained that Taured was a small country nestled between the borders of Spain and France.

The man blustered that yes, Taured was a real country, it had been around for a thousand years, and if someone had a world map, he would show them. A map was produced, and the man pointed to his nation - but on "our" map, it was Andorra.

Declaring himself the victim of a prank, the man became outraged. Further examination by the customs officials showed that the company he claimed to be meeting with had never heard of him, the bank on his checks did not exist, and the hotel he had supposedly reserved a room at had no such record.

Furious and confused, the man was detained by customs officials overnight in a hotel room for investigation. All of his papers and property were secured in police custody. The next morning, the man had vanished without a trace - as had his property and papers!

Was the man simply an exceptionally well-kitted-out paranoid lunatic? Had he accidentally slipped into our universe from his own, nearly-identical one? Or is this simply an urban legend which has been passed around for so long that it has cemented into myth? Sadly, there is no way to know.
