Nostril Hair Extensions

What IS this?

Nostril hair extensions. Look, I don't judge, and I am pretty open-minded about a lot of fashion statements, but this is just WEIRD to me. Firstly, how would these not get in your way? And secondly, why? Not only why would you want your nostril hair longer in the first place, but why would you style it into anemone-shaped... things... outside your nostrils?

I already think fake eyelashes and nails go too far--not because they're too much, because they look nice on many people, but because I can't stand them on my body. They are too much for ME. They're uncomfortable, get in my way and the lashes make me sleepy (so does mascara, actually). I asked my favorite 13-year-old about this new trend and they said it's "kind of creepy." Indeed, it looks like a creature emerging from a cave, but hey, if it's not hurting a person and it's what they like, more power to them. I like some weird things, too.

What do you think of nostril hair extensions?

Exoskeleton Suits In Development

But they're not for bugs

It was only a matter of time before the Avengers inspired scientists to actually develop super suits to use in battle. To be fair, the military has always experimented with new ways to take down enemies, including more advanced uniforms, but now scientists are actually developing supersuits that aren't for flight, superhuman strength or invisibility, but the kind that can improve the lives of normal human beings.

Exoskeleton suits are being made to assist people who've had spinal injuries in order to help them regain mobility. They're also in development for helping workers who sustain injuries on the job, preventing both injuries and fatigue from occuring. Some companies are even utilizing them to maintain their safety standards.

What do you think of these suits? Have you ever used them or anything like them before?

Weird News This Week

Share what you've found in the chat!

Freaky news stories are always plentiful. Here are just a few recent stories...

Scientists found some incredible hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean and they are pretty incredible. I'm always amazed at what we can find in our own oceans. You have to see these pictures to believe them.

Did you know that it rains on the sun? It rains plasma, not water, so that's a bit freaky! It sounds normal for the sun, sure, but for us, that sounds like some scary stuff.

Speaking of space, did you read that Saturn's moon Titan has a bunch of ponds and deep lakes? They are full of methane! And like some lakes here, they change with the seasons.

And if you're worried about us living on this planet much longer, Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the sun, has a planet that may be habitable. The only problem is how we get there in the first place...

Your Beard Is Germier Than A Dog

Beard shampoo could be handy

Have you ever been kissing a bearded person and suddenly tasted something unpleasant? Perhaps you've licked something icky in your own beard. Whether you can taste it or not, you might find it freaky that human beards have been found to carry more germs than dogs. This is due to the fact that beards are coarser and curlier, which means they hold onto germs better, but they're also next to the nostrils and mouth, which are damp, warm and a hotbed for bacteria breeding. Ew!

This is unfortunate news, but just by washing up after sneezing, when possible, or even at least once a day, you can cut down on those germs--many of which are harmful to your health--and help keep them at bay. You can go all natural with whatever DIY beard shampoo you like, or try any of the many brands now available. We really like this company a lot, but there are so many to choose from that it could even be fun to sample different products.

Living in a Potato

It's $200 a night

Have you ever wanted to spend the night in a giant potato? At this Boise attraction, you can. The Big Idaho Potato is an Airbnb destination where all potato lovers can sleep inside a giant potato. Granted, it's not a real potato--it's made of steel, plaster and concrete, which is fortunate since a real potato would be pretty wet and rot around you as you sleep in it--but it's probably the closest you'll ever get to sleeping in a real potato.

The 28-foot hotel traveled around, but now it's set in one location so you can plan an adventure in or around Boise and stay a night or two. There's not much--a bed, some chairs and a few books--but it's cute on a mound that makes it look like it grew right out of the earth.

Life Out There

Most Seem To Agree It's More Possible Than Impossible

Voicing that there's alien life off the planet Earth used to be met with scorn, but today most people know that beliving there's no life is the erroneous way of thinking. There's not a ton of proof either way, but given the vastness of the universe, it makes much more sense for life to exist elsewhere.

Now scientists are saying that there are building blocks of life on this small world known as MU69. The planet, located past Pluto, not only has water, but also molecules that we use here as parts of life. They say that there's no proof that life actually exists there, but it sure does seem to be set up for life to occur on the little world.

What are your thoughts about life on other planets? Have you read any other compelling evidence to support it? Share it in the chat!

Robot Photographer

Would you use one at your event?

Did you know that in some parts of the world it's possible to hire a robot to photograph your event rather than a person? They can also be purchased to be used as waitresses or information dispensers. You guys, what even is this world anymore? We're going to wake up tomorrow and people will be marrying robots, somehow mating with them and the human race will be long gone.

It sounds like a laugh, but this is getting rather freaky, and some scientists even say we should just become one with robots to avoid them taking over humankind someday! If that idea doesn't give you pause, I don't know what will, and between the robots and the floating cities we're going to need when we become a waterworld, we really aren't preparing our kids for the jobs of the future, are we?

All About The Black Hole

Use this handy guide

Everyone is so excited about the photo of a black hole that was released last night, especially scientist Katie Bouman who made it happen (yes, along with many other contributors, but SHE is the reason we have the photo and you never hear every other scientist in history, who all used other scientists' work and data, being as picked apart as she is! STAHP IT NOW). But explaining black holes can be tricky, especially to kids, so this video can come in quite handy if you need to explain them in just a few minutes.

I'm not sure what's freakier--the cool photo of the black hole or the backlash Bouman has been receiving based on her work. There's no such thing as a "lone genius." Every genius had help, whether it was the previous work and data of other scientists in their field, collaborators or even people whose work was stolen (often the work of women--just ask Rosalind Frankin). Many even say that much of Einstein's work may have been the work of his first wife. It's pretty freaky that this mindset still exists in 2019, but what's worse is the belief that men can be "lone geniuses" and women can't. That's just stupid.

Mangroves Moving North Due To Climate Change

Just another day

As a parent, climate change is one of the things that scares me the most. It's almost surpassed violence against my teen in their life and the idea of them driving on my Biggest Fear radar. I can't stand the idea of them not being able to inhabit this planet because of what we, and what our ancestors, have done to it, and the evidence that it's just getting worst continues to mount.

Climate change is actually forcing Florida's mangroves farther north. As with many species, the mangrove affects hundreds, if not thousands, of species around it, and the animals and plants affected by this loss are many. I also saw today that as the ice continues to melt, we're planning floating cities a la Water World in order to plan for our future since, you know, our politicians refuse to rope in our worst polluters and actually stop climate change from happening. Why can't we just fire them for not doing their jobs like anyone else?

The Return of Preventable Disease

And it's the fault of the modern skeptic

Everyone's clutching their pearls at the news of measles outbreaks in the United States, where the disease had been once eradicated due to vaccinations, but this has been happening for years. Mumps, whooping cough and chicken pox are also resurging, and I have heard so many arguments that scare me much worse than the tinfoil theories do. I'm fond of a conspiracy theory as much as the next person, but I know people who don't vaccinate but enter a car every day, which is much deadlier than the risks vaccines pose.

These same people will argue that our immune systems are "meant" to handle these diseases, but I happen to be glad when we can get rid of them and help decrease child mortality, myself. My kid did get chicken pox after being vaccinated, for example, but their experience was much easier than mine. In fact, my kid had such a mild case it was misdiagnosed as something else!

While these memes regarding those against vaccinating might make me chuckle, the freaky reality of parents choosing to not vaccinate remains an unsettling one which threatens everyone. I think in a lot of these cases, if parents understood what it was like to lose a child or to have kids all around you lost to disease, they might take matters more seriously.
