Radio Signals From Deep Space

What do you think their source might be?

By now, you've probably already heard about the mysterious radio signals coming from deep space. The 13 signals, which originated from a totally different galaxy, were picked up by a Canadian telescope. The fast radio bursts are thought by many scientists to be caused by some sort of magnetic field or neutron stars emerging, but there are plenty of people who also postulate that the signals could be coming from an alien race. Indeed, that is the scenario that makes the phenomena the most exciting.

In other weird news this week, a woman is said to have a rare medical condition in which she cannot hear men's voices, only women's. While many are joking that it would be great to have this affliction to be unable to hear low sounds, the poor woman can't even hear the voice of her boyfriend, let alone her favorite male singers or TV shows. It's so sad to hear about and such an extraordinary condition.

Tree Kangaroos Face Extinction

And it's our fault

If it's not freaky to you how many animal species are disappearing due to human actions and waste, I'm not sure what to say. Yes, we're all a little jaded regarding just how much of an invasive species we are on this planet after hearing about all of the terrible things we do to not only one another but the planet itself, but hopefully we're still shocked enough to want to do something about it.

In the case of palm oil use, we totally can, too. It's not too late to stop using palm oil products, check to see if the products you use contain sustainable palm oil or not and put pressure on companies to stop using it entirely. The latest news in terms of palm oil use effects is that tree kangaroos are going extinct as a result. Do we really need another species' blood on our hands because we happen to like bread, soaps, vegan cheese and other items that contain it?

Please see what you can do about curbing your palm oil use, switching products to sustainable oils and asking manufacturers to stop it already. If you're already doing these things, please share your tips in the chat.

Lightning With Your Fireworks

Have you ever seen this?

Recently I saw a couple of freaky and fascinating things in a single night. First, while driving past the city, I saw the entire sky, clouds and all, against the city lights skyline. This might be a common sight for some, but for me it was incredible to see the clouds in the dark. Where I live, we usually only see the stars, moon and sometimes planets; it's just outside the city so the clouds only serve to obscure things. I never see them actually defined in the sky.

Then, as we saw lightning light up the sky, people began shooting off fireworks. I don't think it was particularly smart to be setting fireworks off at the same time as lightning, but I can't deny that it was beautiful. As odd as it seemed to me, according to USA Today the Fourth of July is one of the most hazardous times for lightning, so apparently it's a thing.

Have you seen any odd or freaky things go down this week or recently? If so, what did you see? If you have photos we'd love to see them, too!

An Earthquake Swarm

This unexplained seismic activity is just weird

Seismic waves were found all around the world on November 11 and scientists still aren't sure of what to make of it. The U. S. Geographical Survey detected waves in Ethiopia, New Zealand, Spain and Zambia for twenty minutes. Usually these kinds of low-frequency signals are the result of volcanic activity. Researchers say that they've never seen anything like this, given that usually earthquakes release a big burst of energy followed by different types of waves afterward. But there was no earthquake to generate these waves, which are unlike any others ever measured before.

Since the waves broke out, there's been a little more understanding reported about the seismic activity, which seems to be an "earthquake swarm" with many aftershocks. That said, it's still not normal activity by any means and scientists are continuing to study these phenomena that no humans felt.

Have you read about any freaky phenomena this week? What did you find?

Hand Microchips

This is what we're being reduced to

Years ago, my younger sister said she'd love to be able to carry her ID and credit card in her skin in microchip form. "Blasphemy!" I wailed, clutching my pearls like the Millennial luddite who refuses to get a new phone until it doesn't work anymore, at all, that I am. That's some scary Terminator stuff right there, amirite? It turns out that she wasn't alone, and today thousands of Swedes are doing something along those lines.

Apparently posting what you're doing on social media is SO yesterday. Today your body's supposed to be doing that for you, and for $180 you can get a grain of rice-sized chip implanted into your body that will automatically check you into wherever you're going on social media so you don't have to. Hey government, why track people anymore when they track themselves for you? Abbie Hoffman would be ashamed. Maybe we've just become so jaded that we don't even think privacy is possible anymore, but microchipping yourself and getting tracked like this just sounds horrifying to me. How would you feel about it?

No More Quiet

The world is running out of silent places

Is it any wonder there's practically no more silent places left on Earth? I can't remember the last time I heard complete silence, particularly with everyone's kid on some device or other (not to mention parents and everyone else, too). Yesterday we went to the movies and there was a 10-year-old kid sitting next to me on his phone, with headphones plugged in, next to his dad, who was on his phone, while they waited for the movie to begin! I try to withhold judgment--I have no rocks to throw, as I use a cell phone, and who knows? Maybe the kid was calmer with his device and needed it. No matter the reason, people are definitely noisier than ever.

According to scientists, there are just 12 spots in the country where there's no sound, and I believe it. Each of these sounds like it would be a dream to visit; even though I love my music, family and pets, I also love silence sometimes. I have friends who live in monasteries for periods of time just to experience this silence. I have other friends who have several sounds going at once and I don't know how they live. I live somewhere in the middle of all this and am intrigued by living in silence.

Have you ever lived in silence? What's the most silent place you've ever visited?

Christmas Eyebrows

Are you into this trend?

It's what some might consider to be a freaky and strange phenomenon. Christmas eyebrows, or styling your brows to look like Christmas trees, is indeed a thing, whether you like it or not. People are actually pushing the hairs of their eyebrows into opposite directions to mimic the look of a Christmas tree before adding all kinds of adornments to their "trees."

Some people are brushing body glitter into their brows; others are even dying them green. Most are decorating their eyebrows with tiny jewels, such as those sold for fingernail art, as well as sequins, large glitter pieces and other items. It's a unique trend that will hopefully last just until Christmas and not a moment after. Of course, next we'll be seeing hearts, clovers and eggs in eyebrows throughout the spring...

Do you style your eyebrows for any holidays? If so, how do you do it? What do you think of this trend?

Weird Store Finds This Week

Share yours!

Sometimes the freakiest things that I've ever seen are the things we create ourselves. From "companion robots" with "frigid" settings to these weird wine stockings for Christmas, sometimes I wonder just where we are headed as a species. Some items aren't nefarious at all, but just weird, like this Nicolas Cage pillow or this cat butt gum. Some items might even make great gifts for the people in your life who like weird stuff, like this super weird squirrel puppet for your fingers.

It's not only amazing that people will think up and actually create these freaky goodies, but that others will actually buy them as well! From beer-flavored jelly beans and cotton candy to swimsuits that make you look as if you're covered in chest hair, there's no end to the weird things you'll find on the Internet.

What is the weirdest thing you've discovered while shopping lately? Did you get it for someone or did you cringe and close that tab quick?

Animals with Albinism

Check out these beautiful photos

Albinism really isn't freaky. Most of us have seen an animal or even know someone in our lives with the melanin deficiency, which causes a striking lack of color that is often otherworldly in its beauty. It's unfortunate that so many people with albinism have been targeted with hatred, and even violence, for something they can't control, but the Internet has helped to demonstrate, at least to those willing to learn, that there's nothing scary or harmful about albinism.

These incredible photos of animals with albinism, however, are freaky gorgeous. If you've never seen a pigment-free horse, deer, alligator or owl, you must look through the collection and witness nature's beauty. The little turtle is probably my favorite in this series of photos, but the peacock and giraffe are probably the most striking.

What do you think of these photos? Did you see any other cool animals this week? If so, share your pictures in the chat.

Greenland's Secret Crater

And other weird news of the week

So Facebook is down, for those of you running around like chickens with your heads cut off or turning to Twitter because Instagram is also down! That's pretty freaky, especially if you need it for work. In other weird news...

Greenland apparently has a giant crater under its ice.

Listening to things on repeat makes us like them better.

This poor woman's toxic death hospitalized her medical crew.

This tea house 7,000 feet above sea level might be worth it to some but not for me...

Climate change is leading to more rats, mosquitoes and bacteria.
